So Saturday I got my Army of Two copy in the mail from GameFly and was really looking forward to playing it with my buddy online. Sadly he had to work overtime so I had to jump in solo and give it a try. Well there was no presentation as usual it just took me straight to the main screen; what ever happen to good old intros in games where you see a nice little mini movie? Oh well back to the topic. I jumped into a solo campaign, began training and it was really helpful with getting familiar with the button configuration of the game. Now the key features I like about Army of Two was the interaction with your partner and the similarity with Gears of War but trust me Gears of War is still god when it comes to this particular gameplay. Now here’s my gripe with Army of Two, the covering system is good but you can blind fire at enemies while covering and kill them easily. Unlike Rainbow Six Vegas you can blind fire but it does not always work trying to kill enemies where as Army of Two I just find it too easy to kill any enemy while covering. Also there’s the AGRO system that I’m still a little confused about, I think I used it a couple times but still don’t see how it help me in my missions. I must admit the cut scenes in game is like watching a true HD movie. The graphics and the voice acting is very well done, although I think the character Rios seem very much similar to Kane from Kane & Lynch. Into my first mission I like the graphics of the characters & environment of the game, and it seem to remind me a lot of The Club engine wise. The one thing that annoyed me also was the AI in this game, such as they don’t seem very smart when it comes to battle. They often run right towards me constantly appose to taking cover and and trying to approach me more strategically. After getting in my 2nd and 3rd mission I started to get a little bored with Army of Two objectives and battle. Opposed to Gears of War after every mission I just wanted to go further and not put the controller down. But why am I comparing Army of Two to Gears of War? I have no idea! The weapons in the game is really cool and I like the fact that I can upgrade and customize my guns with earning money during my mission and add more parts to my guns. One that I must note is in previews they said there’s suppose to be over 50 different guns available but they fell short a lot, what’s up with that EA? Well I don’t want to go further into the rest of the game, because I might just give up pretty much what the game has. But I’m not saying don’t pick up Army of Two because it’s just my opinion and I’m only one person. As for me I think this game is a rental and not a buy. It can be finished in less that 3hrs if you play straight thru and the replay value is very low. As far as online you can get easily bored playing the multiplayer campaign due to lack of more multiplayer modes. So here’s my quick review and my rating system of Army of Two.
Graphics= 8
Pros: Main characters look good, nice environment & sweet cut scenes.
Cons: Some of the enemies look kinda crappy.
Sound= 7
Pros: Good voice acting and in game sound effect.
Cons: Sound effects and characters voice seem to be on different levels during gameplay.
Gameplay= 7
Pros: Decent game engine, good interacting with your partner and weapons arsenal.
Cons: Covering system needs revamping, no hugging the walls and the game being too short equals low replay value. Can play with a friend online but will get boring pretty quick.
Overall Rating= 7.3
P.S. Just want to thank my good friend Kid Sidious and his partner Joel Parker for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this site with giving my input on whats going on in the gaming world. I hope to give my honest and best opinions here. Thanks guys!
