There have been rumors all over the net about Sony discontinuing the 80GB PS3. The $499 skew is the only skew that carries total backward compatibility with Sony’s previous playstations. After the 80gb are closeout they will not be restocked in any capacity. Sony’s 60gig PS3 was discontinued 3rd qtr 2007 leaving only the version 40gb PS3. The more economical 40GB currently runs gamers $399 and will be Sony’s featured console. There are rumors of a $299 PS3 in development but there’s no specs available. The lower price PS3 is Sony power move to regain it’s fan base and draw new users whom are intrigued by the PS3’s HD features. 2008 will be Sony’s year to showcase the PS3’s abilities. I wonder how Microsoft and Sony will answer the call.
